Basket Weaving Day

Come join us and learn about the Kids National Basket Weaving Day event taking place June 27. We will make the sample basket (using natural reed, not dyed).
Today's class is Guild sponsored. Kits will be free, but we need you to register. We will need basket weavers and basket friends to help for the event on June 27.
Come and learn all about this event and volunteer needs. |

A Touch of Tradition
|
This class will focus on a variety of traditional willow techniques found in rib style basketry, while making a simple round shape.
Scalloming and weaving on a center rib, split ribs, and double rims, are all skills that may be used in a variety of willow basket shapes and sizes.
Jo learned these techniques while working with Alison Fitzgerald in Ireland and is eager to share this knowledge with other basket makers!
Jo Campbell-Amsler has used willow in her basketry since 1981. Her work is featured in magazines, books, and seen in exhibits across the U.S.,
including ‘A Measure of the Earth’ at Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery. Teaching nationally, Jo also co-organizes retreats, The Willow Gathering and Willow Weekend,
and has hosted basket tours to Ireland, Scotland, Spain, France, Denmark, Wales, England and Italy. Board member of the National Basketry Organization, she works
with fellow board members to “grow the basket community.”

Whisks, Scrubbers and Cobwebbers
|
Do you think brooms are just used for sweeping floors?! In this one-day class you’ll learn that is not the case as we make hand whisk brooms,
small brooms for the kitchen such as pot scrubbers and veggie brushes, and long skinny cobweb brooms for reaching into those high dark corners.
Using traditional broomcorn, students will learn a variety of methods for making these small brooms with experienced broom maker Marybeth Garmoe –
all which incorporate weaving broomcorn! Students will explore the usefulness of this old craft, find a new appreciation for the various decorative
and functional styles of brooms, and leave prepared to take on further broom making projects with confidence–not to mention a handful of small brooms
ready to work and beautiful enough to hang on a wall! |

Small Williamsburg Basket
|
18th century Williamsburg, Virginia (located about 150 miles south of Washington D.C.) is said to be the area this particular basket originated. This basket is known
for the bowing shape of the handle and thus the overall shape of the basket. Basket making was an essential part of daily life, considered a domestic activity.
Baskets of every shape and size were needed in and out of the home.

Fun Twill
Storage Basket
|
Starting with an oak base, students will weave a simple twill pattern with lovely variegated reed. Two or three colors of reed will be available to choose from.
The rim is leather. There will also be many FUN leather colors to choose from, to match your variegated reed. End with a FUN embellishment of natural fibers, pods,
stones and turquoise, or… if you have something at home you would like to incorporate, bring it along!! |

Marlene Meyer is from Minong, WI. Marlene has been weaving and teaching for close to 40 years. While her designs have changed many times,
her genre has always been identifiable. Marlene loves to work with many different textures and natural fibers. Wintering in Arizona over the past 10 years, desert textures and
fibers now influenced her work. Marlene has several galleries carrying her work and she is doing a studio tour in Tubac, Arizona March, 2020. |
